National, USA
CBS press Release:
FAITH, MUSIC AND CULTURE, an interfaith religion special, will be broadcast in NYC Sunday, June 14, on the CBS Television Network at 1 pm. Please check your local station for exact time outside of NYC. Will be broadcast nationally on WCBS local stations.
Music is often a vehicle for expressing religious faith and belief. This broadcast looks at some modern music inspired within the varied cultures of four religions.
...Profiled is the Brooklyn Qawwali Party, an eclectic 11-piece orchestra based in Brooklyn, N.Y. The group's founder, Brook Martinez, was inspired by the music of the late Qawwali singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, and formed his own band based on this style of music. The result is the sound of Qawwali with a funky jazz sensibility. Qawwali is the devotional music of Sufis, the mystical arm of Islam. The Sufis believe that communion with the divine is possible through this music.
The program will also feature other artists as well. Tune in!

So for those who have seen us play our repertoire, prepare for some new music!
Including...
"Allah, Mohammed, Char, Yaar"
Click here to watch Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Party perform. Also listen to NFAK speak so beautifully and humbly about the forefathers of Qawwali.
"Maki Madni"
I discovered this track on the NFAK album "The Last Prophet" and it's a true gem. Only after choosing to transcribe it for BQP did I discover that "Derek Trucks Band," an eclectic American jam band, has recorded this song with NFAK's nephew Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. To listen to their version, click here. You can find the NFAK version on his records "Shahen-Shah" as well as "Live in London Vol IV" and "Sufi Qawwalis."
And back by popular demand:
"Yeh Jo Halka Halka"
Along side Allah Hu and Mustt Mustt, this is the most requested NFAK song for BQP. Also popularized by the late great Jeff Buckley, who was a huge NFAK fan ("Nusrat's my Elvis!" he proclaimed). Click here to listen to Jeff's impromptu version. For NFAK version, click here. For the NFAK version that Jeff Buckley had learned, you can find it on NFAK's record "The Day, The Night, The Dusk, The Dawn." on Shanachie records. Quite amazing.
So, we're happy to bring you this new music, as well as some of your old favorites. Please come and join us for this special event.
